THIS IS THE SCENE OF THE SCENE UNSEEN

THE UNSEEN SEEN OF THE SCENE UNSEEN THIS IS THE SCENE

A

HISTORY OF GOD

Karen Armstrong

The God of the Mystics

THE

BOOK OF CREATION

"THERE IS NO ATTEMPT MADE TO DESCRIBE THE CREATIVE PROCESS REALISTICALLY

THE ACCOUNT IS SYMBOLIC AND SHOWS GOD CREATING THE WORLD BY MEANS OF LANGUAGE

AS THOUGH WRITING A BOOK BUT LANGUAGE ENTIRELY TRANSFORMED

THE MESSAGE OF CREATION IS CLEAR EACH LETTER OF THE ALPHABET IS GIVEN A NUMERICAL

VALUE BY COMBINING THE LETTERS WITH THE SACRED NUMBERS

REARRANGING THEM IN ENDLESS CONFIGURATIONS

THE MYSTIC WEANED THE MIND AWAY FROM THE NORMAL CONNOTATIONS OF WORDS"

HISTORY OF GOD

Karen Armstrong

The God of the Mystics

Page 250

"A quality of holiness, a quality of power, a fearful quality, a dreaded quality, a quality of awe, a quality of dismay, a quality of terror Such is the quality of the garment of the Creator, Adonai, God of Israel, who, crowned, comes to the thone of his glory; His garment is engraved inside and outside and entirely covered with YHWH, YHWH. "No eyes are able to behold it, neither the eyes of flesh and blood, nor the eyes of his servants.6"

"It was reported in a prophetic 'hadith' – old tradition, where, that God is one, and has er ninety-nine attributes. And it goes on to enumerate all the attributes from one to ninety-nine."

BBC Online - On The Record - Interviews

"certainly wouldn't make sense to say, not in January ninety-nine, but perhaps in July ninety-nine."

BBC - Radio 3 - Heiner Goebbels Interview

"It was ninety-nine, nine, ninety per cent was written, or maybe even more."

BBC - collective - games #132xbox360

"Not least as the game catalogue expands to include Ridge Racer 6, Dead Or Alive 4 (with playable Halo Spartans!), The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Gears Of War, Ninety-Nine Night and, of course, Halo 3."

BBC - Birmingham Faith - An Introduction to Islam

"The ninety-nine beads are used to say the ninty-nine names for God during prayer"

BBC Radio 4 - Thinking Allowed - 5 June 2002

"Had he lived, Orwell would have been ninety-nine this month but more than fifty years after his death he continues to provoke debate."

BBC Online - On The Record - Interviews

"Now ninety-nine per cent of the youngsters who are locked up, are locked up because the courts have reached the end of their tether."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/in_praise_of_god.shtml

"Catholic Christians use them in five sets of ten, Muslims have ninety-nine and Hindus one hundred and eight - but what unites all these faiths is that they use strings of beads as an aid to prayer.

Join Michael Ford as he goes on a journey to discover what it is about prayer with beads that's so meaningful to people of very different traditions.

Young Catholic offenders at a prison near London tell us how saying the rosary helps them cope with anger and depression in jail.

Prisoners of conscience in the former Soviet Union so much wanted to have beads to pray with that they used their rations of black bread to make them.

And an Orthodox priest and former monk explains why the seemingly endless repetition of certain prayers can empty the mind to make space for God."

QUESTION

"Why are goods priced at 99p, and not a full pound?

"Further to the earlier answer, noting that the main reason is psychological, there is nothing new about this common practice. . . "

" It is clear that by joining a number of such sheets of papyrus together, a roll of almost any length could be made. The quality of the papyrus depended entirely upon the class of plant used in its manufacture. The colour of the papyri that have come down to us varies gr.eatly, from a rich brown to a whitish-grey; the texture of some is exceedingly coarse, and of others fine and silky. The width of papyri varies from six to seventeen inches, and the longest papyrus known (Harris, No. I, B.M. 9999) measures 135 feet in length. The finest hieroglyphic papyri of the Book of the Dead are about fifteen inches in width, and when they contain a tolerably full number of chapters, are from eighty to ninety feet long. The papyri upon which contracts in Greek and Demotic are written are of a coarse fibre, and vary from ten to fourteen inches in wid th; their lengths vary from one to ten feet. The usual width of papyri employed for literary compositions is about eight inches."

"The fish-man never takes part in the combat scenes of the other mythological figures. A curious slip-up has apparently occurred in "Intelligent Life in the Universe,"where Sagan and Shlovskii reproduce Frankfort's plate 33 (b)
and (g); one shows the "goat-fish" . symbol of the water god Ea, the other a dragon bearing the symbols of Jupiter (Marduk) and Mercury (Nabu). Plate 34 (b) and some drawings in the text are the ones which represent Oannes; perhaps their edition of Cylinder Seals, like the one I consulted, had some faulty plate references.
The same characters, as it seems, appear in Egyptian mythology as the Seven Wise Ones of the goddess Mehurt or Hetep-sekhus, who as "The Eye of Ra" is associated with the Moon,19 as well as representing the watery abyss of heaven.2o The Seven Wise Ones came out of the water, from the pupil of the Eye of Ra, and taking the form of seven hawks, they flew upward to the sky to preside with Thoth (the counter of stars, measurer and enumerator of the Earth, lord of books, scribe of the gods) over learning and letters.
Now, in The Book of the Dead, chapter XVII, there is a complicated passage involving the sovereign princes who stand behind Osiris in the Underworld and purify souls brought before him of their sins and crimes. Those princes are Kestha, Hapi, Taumutef, and Qebhsennuf (the gods of the cardinal points), in association with Thoth, Astes (the lord of the Underworld), and Sebek, who with his company dwells in water, does away with sins and crimes and follows Hetep-sekhus, the Eye of Ra. . . Perhaps because he feared the reader might be in difficulties, the author then gives (v. 99) two alternative sets of seven names for these beings, who were appointed to guard the body of Osiris on Earth. Just to get it clear, there are seven of them, dwelling in water or in watery sky, associated with (or including) Thoth and following Meh-urt.
The sovereign princes are introduced, however, as / Page 335 / those who destroyed the faults of the Seven Spirits. These seven, who are among the followers of Osiris, are the "khus" or spirits of the Great Bear, which the ancient Egyptians called "the Thigh." The princes behind Osiris are "behind the Thigh in the Northern sky" -in other words, unless I've got this entirely wrong, they are identified with the stars of Bootes.
As I said, two alternative sets of names for them follow. (The translation says they're the names of the Seven Spirits, but they're distinguished from them in v. 90-92.) One is essentially the list we have: the cardinal points, plus Horns-in-Blindness (Thoth), and two others (I don't know if they're alternative names for Astes and Sebek). The other list is as follows:
1. Netcheh-netcheh (the first, the leader, or the glorious one).
2. Aatqetqet (he who is mighty in revolving) .
3. Anertanef-bes-f-khenti-heh-f (the dweller in the flame giveth not his flame) .
4. Aq-her-ami-unnut-f (he entereth in his hour).
5. Teshermaati-ami-het-Anes (the red-eyed one in the house of Anes) . , .
6. Ubes-hra-per-em-khet-khet (the fiery face who cometh onward and retreateth).
7. Maa-em-kerh-an-nef-em-rhru (he seeth in the dark and bringeth in the day). .
That's an interesting set of names. If number 5 were Arcturns (the Anes bandlet were apparently the seven guardians of Osiris' body), and number 7 were Delta Bootis, the easternmost star of the constellation, then number 1 with its double-barreled name could be Epsilon, number 2 could be Gamma, which is an A 7 giant, and number 6 Zeta, which is a binary with a very eccentric orbit and a period of 130 years."

"Netcheh-netcheh

(the first, the leader, or the glorious one)."

The Private Life Of A Easter Masterpiece

Page 65

11 DAN BROWN must be relieved to know that he is not a plagiarist, but he hasn't got- off scot free this week.
In yesterday evening's excellent documentary by Ian :M;ichael J ones, a catalogue of the disasters and indignities suffered over the past 500 years by Leonardo Da Vinci's. The Last Supper was rounded off by a distinguished art critic who said that the greatest travesty of all was committed by Mr Brown.

More people have- read The Da Vinci Code than have seen the - picture in its entire lifetime, and have been led to believe that the figure to Jesus's right -is not St John, but Mary Magdalene.

It is, we were assured, a misreading at every level and distorts the ideas that students of the painting have about art, the Renaissance and history itself. .
Brown was not the only one to get it in the neck. We were reminded that The Last Supper has also been used to get cheap laughs and even to sell jeans on topless girls.
It has also suffered from damp, war and repeated.overpainting by countless artists.
Today, it is a ghost of the original, yet the story of its creation, its adaptation and its survival serves only to remind us why it is still the most famous Christian artwork in the world.
