"By writing the 26 letters of the alphabet in a certain order one may put down almost any message (this book 'is written with the same letters' as the Encyclopaedia Britannica and Winnie the Pooh, only the order of the letters differs). In the same way Nature is able to convey with her language how a cell and a whole organism is to be constructed and how it is to function. Nature has succeeded better than we humans; for the genetic code there is only one universal language which is the same in a man, a bean plant and a bacterium."

HISTORY OF GOD

Karen Armstrong 1993

The God of the Mystics

Page 250

"Perhaps the most famous of the early Jewish mystical texts is the fifth century Sefer Yezirah (The Book of Creation). There is no attempt to describe the creative process realistically; the account is unashamedly symbolic and shows God creating the world by means of language as though he were writing a book. But language has been entirely transformed and the message of creation is no longer clear. Each letter of the Hebrew alphabet is given a numerical value; by combining the letters with the sacred numbers, rearranging them in endless configurations, the mystic weaned his mind away from the normal connotations of words."

Patterns

"The essence of mathematics is to look for patterns.

Our minds seem to be organised to search for relationships and sequences. We look for hidden orders.

These intuitions seem to be more important than the facts themselves, for there is always the thrill at finding something, a pattern, it is a discovery - what was unknown is now revealed. Imagine looking up at the stars and finding the zodiac!

Searching out patterns is a pure delight.

Suddenly the counters fall into place and a connection is found, not necessarily a geometric one, but a relationship between numbers, pictures of the mind, that were not obvious before. There is that excitement of finding order in something that was otherwise hidden.

And there is the knowledge that a huge unseen world lurks behind the facades we see of the numbers themselves."

FINGERPRINTS OF THE GODS

A QUEST FOR THE BEGINNING AND THE END

Graham Hancock 1995

Chapter 32

Speaking to the Unborn

Page 285

"It is understandable that a huge range of myths from all over the ancient world should describe geological catastrophes in graphic detail. Mankind survived the horror of the last Ice Age, and the most plausible source for our enduring traditions of flooding and freezing, massive volcanism and devastating earthquakes is in the tumultuous upheavals unleashed during the great meltdown of 15,000 to 8000 BC. The final retreat of the ice sheets, and the consequent 300-400 foot rise in global sea levels, took place only a few thousand years before the beginning of the historical period. It is therefore not surprising that all our early civilizations should have retained vivid memories of the vast cataclysms that had terrified their forefathers.
Much harder to explain is the peculiar but distinctive way the myths of cataclysm seem to bear the intelligent imprint of a guiding hand.l Indeed the degree of convergence between such ancient stories is frequently remarkable enough to raise the suspicion that they must all have been 'written' by the same 'author'.
Could that author have had anything to do with the wondrous deity, or superhuman, spoken of in so many of the myths we have reviewed, who appears immediately after the world has been shattered by a horrifying geological catastrophe and brings comfort and the gifts of civilization to the shocked and demoralized survivors?
White and bearded, Osiris is the Egyptian manifestation of this / Page 286 / universal figure, and it may not be an accident that one of the first acts he is remembered for in myth is the abolition of cannibalism among the primitive inhabitants of the Nile Valley.2 Viracocha, in South America, was said to have begun his civilizing mission immediately after a great flood; Quetzalcoatl, the discoverer of maize, brought the benefits of crops, mathematics, astronomy and a refined culture to Mexico after the Fourth Sun had been overwhelmed by a destroying deluge.
Could these strange myths contain a record of encounters between scattered palaeolithic tribes which survived the last Ice Age and an as yet unidentified high civilization which passed through the same epoch?
And could the myths be attempts to communicate?

A message in the bottle of time"

'Of all the other stupendous inventions,' Galileo once remarked,

what sublimity of mind must have been his who conceived how to communicate his most secret thoughts to any other person, though very distant either in time or place, speaking with those who are in the Indies, speaking to those who are not yet born, nor shall be this thousand or ten thousand years? And with no greater difficulty than the various arrangements of two dozen little signs on paper? Let this be the seal of all the admirable inventions of men.3

If the 'precessional message' identified by scholars like Santillana, von Dechend and Jane Sellers is indeed a deliberate attempt at communication by some lost civilization of antiquity, how come it wasn't just written down and left for us to find? Wouldn't that have been easier than encoding it in myths? Perhaps.
Nevertheless, suppose that whatever the message was written on got destroyed or worn away after many thousands of years? Or suppose that the language in which it was inscribed was later forgotten utterly (like the enigmatic Indus Valley script, which has been studied closely for more than half a century but has so far resisted all attempts at decoding)? It must be obvious that in such circumstances a written / Page 287 / legacy to the future would be of no value at all, because nobody would be able to make sense of it.
What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them - and the city of Teotihuacan may be the calling-card of a lost civilization written in the eternal language of mathematics.
Geodetic data, related to the exact positioning of fixed geographical points and to the shape and size of the earth, would also remain valid and recognizable for tens of thousands of years, and might be most conveniently expressed by means of cartography (or in the construction of giant geodetic monuments like the Great Pyramid of Egypt, as we shall see).
Another 'constant' in our solar system is the language of time: the great but regular intervals of time calibrated by the inch-worm creep of precessional motion. Now, or ten thousand years in the future, a message that prints out numbers like 72 or 2160 or 4320 or 25,920 should be instantly intelligible to any civilization that has evolved a modest talent for mathematics and the ability to detect and measure the almost imperceptible reverse wobble that the sun appears to make along the ecliptic against the background of the fixed stars..."

"What one would look for, therefore, would be a universal language, the kind of language that would be comprehensible to any technologically advanced society in any epoch, even a thousand or ten thousand years into the future. Such languages are few and far between, but mathematics is one of them"

THE DEATH OF GODS IN ANCIENT EGYPT

Jane B. Sellars 1992

Page 204

"The overwhelming awe that accompanies the realization, of the measurable orderliness of the universe strikes modern man as well. Admiral Weiland E. Byrd, alone In the Antarctic for five months of polar darkness, wrote these phrases of intense feeling:

Here were the imponderable processes and forces of the cosmos, harmonious and soundless. Harmony, that was it! I could feel no doubt of oneness with the universe. The conviction came that the rhythm was too orderly. too harmonious, too perfect to be a product of blind chance - that, therefore there must be purpose in the whole and that man was part of that whole and not an accidental offshoot. It was a feeling that transcended reason; that went to the heart of man's despair and found it groundless. The universe was a cosmos, not a chaos; man was as rightfully a part of that cosmos as were the day and night.10

Returning to the account of the story of Osiris, son of Cronos god of' Measurable Time, Plutarch takes, pains to remind the reader of the original Egyptian year consisting of 360 days.

Phrases are used that prompt simple mental. calculations and an attention to numbers, for example, the 360-day year is described as being '12 months of 30 days each'. Then we are told that, Osiris leaves on a long journey, during which Seth, his evil brother, plots with 72 companions to slay Osiris: He also secretly obtained the measure of Osiris and made ready a chest in which to entrap him.

The, interesting thing about this part of the-account is that nowhere in the original texts of the Egyptians are we told that Seth, has 72 companions. We have already been encouraged to equate Osiris with the concept of measured time; his father being Cronos. It is also an observable fact that Cronos-Saturn has the longest sidereal period of the known planets at that time, an orbit. of 30 years. Saturn is absent from a specific constellation for that length of time.

A simple mathematical fact has been revealed to any that are even remotely sensitive to numbers: if you multiply 72 by 30, the years of Saturn's absence (and the mention of Osiris's absence prompts one to recall this other), the resulting product is 2,160: the number of years required, for one 30° shift, or a shift: through one complete sign of the zodiac. This number multplied by the /Page205 / 12 signs also gives 25,920. (And Plutarch has reminded us of 12)

If you multiply the unusual number 72 by 360, a number that Plutarch mentions several times, the product will be 25,920, again the number of years symbolizing the ultimate rebirth.

This 'Eternal Return' is the return of, say, Taurus to the position of marking the vernal equinox by 'riding in the solar bark with. Re' after having relinquished this honoured position to Aries, and subsequently to the to other zodiacal constellations.

Such a return after 25,920 years is indeed a revisit to a Golden Age, golden not only because of a remarkable symmetry In the heavens, but golden because it existed before the Egyptians experienced heaven's changeability.

But now to inform the reader of a fact he or she may already know. Hipparaus did: not really have the exact figures: he was a trifle off in his observations and calculations. In his published work, On the Displacement of the Solstitial and Equinoctial Signs, he gave figures of 45" to 46" a year, while the truer precessional lag along the ecliptic is about 50 seconds. The exact measurement for the lag, based on the correct annual lag of 50'274" is 1° in 71.6 years, or 36in 25,776 years, only 144 years less than the figure of 25,920.

With Hipparchus's incorrect figures a 'Great Year' takes from 28,173.9 to 28,800 years, Incorrect by a difference of from 2,397.9 years to 3,024.

Since Nicholas Copernicus (AD 1473-1543) has always been credited with giving the correct numbers (although Arabic astronomer Nasir al-Din Tusi,11 born AD 1201, is known to have fixed the Precession at 50°), we may correctly ask, and with justifiable astonishment 'Just whose information was Plutarch transmitting'

AN IMPORTANT POSTSCRIPT

Of course, using our own notational system, all the important numbers have digits that reduce to that amazing number 9 a number that has always delighted budding mathematician.

Page 206

Somewhere along the way, according to Robert Graves, 9 became the number of lunar wisdom.12

This number is found often in the mythologies of the world. the Viking god Odin hung for nine days and nights on the World Tree in order to acquire the secret of the runes, those magic symbols out of which writing and numbers grew. Only a terrible sacrifice would give away this secret, which conveyed upon its owner power and dominion over all, so Odin hung from his neck those long 9 days and nights over the 'bottomless abyss'. In the tree were 9 worlds, and another god was said to have been born of 9 mothers.

Robert Graves, in his White Goddess, Is intrigued by the seemingly recurring quality of the number 72 in early myth and ritual. Graves tells his reader that 72 is always connected with the number 5, which reflects, among other things, the five Celtic dialects that he was investigating. Of course, 5 x 72= 360, 360 x 72= 25,920. Five is also the number of the planets known to the ancient world, that is, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Venus Mercury.

Graves suggests a religious mystery bound up with two ancient Celtic 'Tree Alphabets' or cipher alphabets, which as genuine articles of Druidism were orally preserved and transmitted for centuries. He argues convincingly that the ancient poetry of Europe was ultimately based on what its composers believed to be magical principles, the rudiments of which formed a close religious secret for centuries. In time these were-garbled, discredited and forgotten.

Among the many signs of the transmission of special numbers he points out that the aggregate number of letter strokes for the complete 22-letter Ogham alphabet that he is studying is 72 and that this number is the multiple of 9, 'the number of lunar wisdom'. . . . he then mentions something about 'the seventy day season during which Venus moves successively from. maximum eastern elongation 'to inferior conjunction and maximum western elongation'.13

Page 207

"...Feniusa Farsa, Graves equates this hero with Dionysus Farsa has 72 assistants who helped him master the 72 languages created at the confusion of Babel, the tower of which is said to be built of 9 different materials

We are also reminded of the miraculous translation into Greek of the Five Books of Moses that was done by 72 scholars working for 72 days, Although the symbol for the Septuagint is LXX, legend, according to the fictional letter of Aristeas, records 72. The translation was done for Ptolemy Philadelphus (c.250 BC), by Hellenistic Jews, possibly from Alexandra.14

Graves did not know why this number was necessary, but he points out that he understands Frazer's Golden Bough to be a a book hinting that 'the secret involves the truth that the Christian dogma, and rituals, are the refinement of a great body of primitive beliefs, and that the only original element in Christianity- is the personality of Christ.15

Frances A. Yates, historian of Renaissance hermetisma tells, us the cabala had 72 angels through which the sephiroth (the powers of God) are believed to be approached, and further, she supplies the information that although the Cabala supplied a set of 48 conclusions purporting to confirm the Christian religion from the foundation of ancient wisdom, Pico Della Mirandola, a Renaissance magus, introduced instead 72, which were his 'own opinion' of the correct number. Yates writes, 'It is no accident there are seventy-two of Pico's Cabalist conclusions, for the conclusion shows that he knew something of the mystery of the Name of God with seventy-two letters.'16

In Hamlet's Mill de Santillarta adds the facts that 432,000 is the number of syllables in the Rig-Veda, which when multiplied by the soss (60) gives 25,920" (The reader is forgiven for a bit of laughter at this point)

Thee Bible has not escaped his pursuit. A prominent Assyriologist of the last century insisted that the total of the years recounted
mounted in Genesis for the lifetimes of patriarchs from the Flood also contained the needed secret numbers. (He showed that in the 1,656.years recounted in the Bible there are 86,400 7 day weeks, and dividing this number yields / Page 208 / 43,200.) In Indian yogic schools it is held that all living beings exhale and inhale 21,600 times a day, .multiply this by 2 and again we have.the necessary 432 digits.

Joseph Campbell discerns the secret in the date set for the coming of Patrick to Ireland. Myth-gives this date-as.- the interest-
ing number of AD.432.18

Whatever one may think-of some of these number coincidences, it becomes. difficult to escape the suspicion that many signs (number and otherwise) -indicate that early man observed the results.. of the movement of Precession . and that the-.transmission of this information was .considered of prime importance.

'With the awareness of the phenomenon, observers would certainly have tried for its measure, and such an endeavour would
have constituted the construction-of a 'Unified Field Theory' for nothing .less than Creation itself. Once determined, it would have been information worthy of secrecy and worthy of the passing on to future adepts.

But one last word about mankind's romance with number coincidences. The antagonist in John Updike's novel, Roger's Version, is a computer hacker, who, convinced.,that scientific evidence of God's existence is accumulating, endeavours to prove it by feeding -all the available scientific information. into a comuter. In his search for God 'breaking, through', he has become fascinated by certain numbers that have continually been cropping up. He explains them excitedly as 'the terms of Creation':

"...after a while I noticed that all over the sheet there seemed to hit these twenty-fours Jumping out at me. Two four; two, four.Planck time, for instance, divided by the radiation constant yields a figure near eight times ten again to the negative twenty-fourth, and the permittivity of free space, or electric constant, into the Bohr radiusekla almost exactly six times ten to the negative twenty-fourth. On positive side, the electromagnetic line-structure constant times Hubble radius - that is, the size of the universe as we now perceive it gives us something quite close to ten to the twenty-fourth, and the strong-force constant times the charge on the proton produces two point four times ten to the negative eighteenth, for another I began to circle twenty-four wherever it appeared on the Printout here' - he held it up. his piece of striped and striped wallpaper, decorated / Page 209 / with a number of scarlet circles - 'you can see it's more than random.'19
This inhabitant of the twentieth century is convinced that the striking occurrences of 2 and 4 reveal the sacred numbers by which God is speaking to us.

So much for any scorn directed to ancient man's fascination with number coincidences. That fascination is alive and well, Just a bit more incomprehensible"

OF TIME AND STARS

Arthur C. Clarke 1972

FOREWORD

"'Into the Comet' and 'The Nine Billion Names of God' both involve computers and the troubles they may cause us. While writing this preface, I had occasion to call upon my own HP 9100A computer, Hal Junior, to answer an interesting question. Looking at my records, I find that I have now written just about one hundred short stories. This volume contains eighteen of them: therefore, how many possible 18-story collections will I be able to put together? The answer as I am sure will be instantly obvious to you - is 100 x 99. . . x 84 x 83 divided by 18 x 17 x 16 ... x .2 x 1. This is an impressive number - Hal Junior tells me that it is approximately 20,772,733,124,605,000,000.

Page 15

The Nine Billion Names of God

'This is a slightly unusual request,' said Dr Wagner, with what he hoped was commendable restraint. 'As far as I know, it's the first time anyone's been asked to supply a Tibetan monastery with an Automatic Sequence Computer. I don't wish to be inquisitive, but I should hardly have thought that your - ah - establishment had much use for such a machine. Could you explain just what you intend to do with it?'
'Gladly,' replied the lama, readjusting his silk robes and carefully putting away the slide rule he had been using far currency conversions. 'Your Mark V Computer can carry out any routine mathematical operation involving up to ten digits. However, for our work we are interested in letters, not numbers. As we wish you to modify the output circuits, the machine will be printing words, not columns of figures.'
'I don't quite understand. . .'
'This is a project on which we have been working for the last three centuries - since the lamasery was founded, in fact. It is somewhat alien to your way of thought, so I hope you will listen with an open mind while I explain it.'
'Naturally.'
'It is really quite simple. We have been compiling a list which shall contain all the possible names of God.'
'I beg your pardon?'

Page16

'We have reason to believe,' continued the lama imperturbably, 'that all such names can be written with not more than nine letters in an alphabet we have devised.'
'And you have been doing this for three centuries?'
'Yes: we expected it would take us about fifteen thousand years to complete the task.'
'Oh,' Dr Wagner looked a little dazed. 'Now I see why you wanted to hire one of our machines. But what exactly is the purpose of this project?'
The lama hesitated for a fraction of a second, and Wagner wondered if he had offended him. If so, there was no trace of annoyance in the reply.
'Call it ritual, if you like, but it's a fundamental part of our belief. All the many names of the Supreme Being - God Jehova, Allah, and so on - they are only man-made labels. There is a philosophical problem of some difficulty here, which I do not propose to discuss, but somewhere among all the possible combinations of letters that can occur are what one may call the real names of God. By systematic permutation of letters, we have been trying to list them all.'
'I see. You've been starting at AAAAAAA . . . and working up to ZZZZZZZZ . . .'
'Exactly - though we use a special alphabet of our own. Modifying the electromatic typew
riters to deal with this is, of course, trivial. A rather more interesting problem is that of devising suitable circuits to eliminate ridiculous combinations. For example, no letter must occur more than three times in succession.'
,'Three? Surely you mean two.'
'Three is correct: I am afraid it would take too long to explain why, even if you understood our language.' "

Page 68

Into the Comet

"Pickett's fingers danced over the beads, sliding them up and down the wires with lightning speed. There were twelve wires in all, so that the abacus could handle numbers up to 999,999,999,999 - or could be divided into separate sections where several independent calculations could be carried out simultaneously.
'374072,' said Pickett, after an incredibly brief interval of time. 'Now see how long you take to do it, with pencil and paper.'
There was a much longer delay before Martens, who like most mathematicians was poor at arithmetic, called out '375072'. A hasty check soon confirmed that Martens had taken at least three times as long as Pickett to arrive at the wrong answer.
The atronomer's face was a study in mingled chagrin, astonishment, and curiosity.
'Where did you learn that trick?' he asked. 'I thought those things could only add and subtract.'
'Well - multiplication's only repeated addition, isn't it? All I did was to add 856 seven times in the unit column, three times in the tens column, and four times in the hundreds column. You do the same thing when you use pencil and paper. Of course, there are some short cuts, but if you think I'm fast, you should have seen my granduncle. He used to work in a Yokohama bank, and you couldn't see his fingers / Page 69 / when he was going at speed"

GOD

Einstein's blunder. - When Einstein tried to refute quantum physics with his now famous dictum 'God does not play dice' He revealed his ignorance of scripture, for God does indeed play dice in the form of a game called urim and thummim. These flat stone dice are mentioned many times in the Hebrew Bible. Although urim and thummim actually belonged to God (Ps.-Philo 47:2) they were jealously guarded by the high priest either in his ephod (an oracular pouch) or in a pocket by his chest. The exact manner in which urim and thummim was played has been lost to the mysteries of time, but it is thought they provided the same function as a coin when it is flipped for heads or tails. When Saul wished to establish a question of blame he set up the urim and thummim asking: '"Lord God of Israel, if fault lies-with me or my son Jonathan give urim: if the fault lies with your people Israel, give thummim." Jonathan and Saul were indicated and the people went free. Saul then said: "Cast the lot between me and Jonathan," and Jonathan was indicated' (1 Sam. 14:41-2).
After a while it dawned on the people of Israel that urim and thummim did not always give reliable results (Ps.-Philo 47:2) and so God ceased to be addressed through this medium, probably as early as the seventh century BCE. The whole matter might well have been forgotten had it not been for God lending his urim and thummim nearly two thousand years later to Joseph Smith in order to help the prophet interpret the 'revised Egyptian' squiggles of the Book of Mormon. Smith had to return them to the angel, Moroni, and regrettably failed to make accurate drawings before handing them back. However, in a /Page 163 / bewildering twist, God later informed Smith (2 April 1843) that he (God) was now living inside a giant urim and thummim.
The place where I reside [said God] is a great Urim and Thummim. This earth in its sanctified and immortal state, will be made like unto crystal and will be a Urim and Thummim to the inhabitants who dwell thereon, whereby all things pertaining to an inferior kingdom, or all kingdoms of a lower order, will be manifest to those who dwell on it; and this earth will be Christ's. Then the white stone mentioned in Revelation 2:17, will become a Urim and Thummim to each- individual who receives one, whereby things pertaining to a higher order of kingdoms will be made known. (Doctrine and Covenants, 130:8-10)

And Einstein thought that the cosmological constant was his 'biggest blunder'!

"QUESTION When was the Star of Davld first used as a symbol?

ACCORDING to research undertaken by Christopher Knight and Robert Lomas for their book The Hiram Key, which studies the history of Freemasonry, the origins of the hexagram are ancient Egyptian. The design is made up from two pyramids, the upward (symbol omitted) pointing one is the symbol of the power of the king; its base on the earth and its point reaching up to heaven.
The other pyramid represents the power of the priest, being based in heaven and pointing down to earth. Conjoined they form the Star of David.
The two pyramids came to represent the double Messiah; the kingly and the priestly messiahs.

As such, it is the true sign of Jesus who saw himself as a both priestly (he was a rabbi) and kingly (royal House of David) Messiah- the living 'star of David'.
The star of David does not appear in ancient Jewish books other than as one of many decorations, having no special significance to Jews at that time. It was used in Europe on buildings erected by the Knights Templar and on Christian churches in the Middle-Ages.
In the 19th century the mostly non-Jewish architects who designed synagogues wanted a symbol which was as important as the Cross was to Christianity or the crescent was to Islam. Searching around, they settled on-the hexagram; so its use as the symbol of Judaism is relatively modern.

"RAINBOW THAT SET THE SKY ON FIRE"

From Barry Wigmore in Washington

IN a breathtaking blaze of glory, Nature puts on one of its most spectacular sky shows.
In reds, oranges, blues and greens, it looks as though a flaming rainbow is stretched above the clouds.
But this circumhorizon arc, as it is known, owes more to ice than fire. It occurs when sunlight passes through ice crystals in high cirrus clouds. It is one of 15 types of ice halos formed only when the most specific of factors dovetail precisely together. This blanket of fire, covering hundreds of square miles, is the rarest phenomenon of them all. It was spotted in the U.S. on the. Washington/Idaho border around midday last Saturday.
Dr Jonathan Fox, of the U.S. National Weather Service In Spokane, Washington, said: 'It was even more spectacular than the Northern Lights. I feel lucky to have seen it because it only forms In very rare situations. . This is the first one I've ever seen. It was a breathtaking sight and it hung around for about an hour.'
To create a rainbow of fire, clouds mus1 be at least 20,000ft high and the Ice crystals within them align horizontally Instead of their usual vertical position. The sun also needs to be at least 58 degrees above th. horizon. Then, the magic can begin

"As we saw, a single ball in space has no motion, whereas two balls give the possibility of linear motion, three balls motion in a plane, and four balls motion in three dimensions.
The same is true for the activation of an electric current. No current will "flow" through a wire until the positive pole is connected with the negative, or, to put it very simply, no current will start unless it has a point of arrival. and a living organism is a "point of arrival" apart from which there can never be the "currents" or phenomena of light, heat, weight, hardness, and so forth. One might almost say that the magic of the brain is to evoke these marvels from the universe, as a harpist evokes melody from the silent strings.
A still more cogent example of existence as relationship is the production of a rainbow.1 For a rainbow appears only when there is a certain triangular relationship between three components: the sun, moisture in the atmosphere, and an observer. If all three are present. and if the angular relationship between them is correct, then, and then only, will there be the phenomenon "rainbow." Diaphanous as it may be, a rainbow is no subjective hallucination. It can be verified by any number of observers, though each will see it in a slightly different position. As a boy. I once chased the end of a rainbow on my bicycle and was amazed to find that it always receded. It was like trying to catch the reflection of the moon on water. I did not then understand that no rainbow would appear unless the sun, and I, and the invisible center of the bow were on the same straight line, so that I changed the apparent position of the bow as I moved.
The point is, then, that an observer in the proper position is as necessary for the manifestation of a rainbow as the other two components. the sun and the moisture. Of course, one could say that if the sun and a body of moisture were in the / Page 95 / right relationship, say, over the ocean, any observer on a ship that sailed into line with them would see a rainbow. But one could also say that if an observer and the sun were correctly aligned there would be a rainbow if there were moisture in the air!
Somehow the first set of conditions seems to preserve the reality of the rainbow apart from an observer. But the second set, by eliminating a good, solid "external reality," seems to make it an indisputable fact that, under such conditions, there is no rainbow. The reason is only that it supports our current mythology to assert that things exist on their own, whether there is an observer or not. It supports the fantasy that man is not really involved in the world, that he makes no real difference to it, and that he can observe reality independently without changing it. For the myth of this solid and sensible physical world which is "there," whether we see it or not, goes hand-inhand with the myth that every observer is a separate ego, "confronted" with a reality quite other than himself.
Perhaps we can accept this reasoning without too much struggle when it concerns things like rainbows and reflections, whose reality status was never too high. But what if it dawns on us that our perception of rocks, mountains, and stars is a situation of just the same kind? There is nothing in the least unreasonable about this. We have not had to drag in any such spooks as mind, soul, or spirit. We have simply been talking of an interaction between physical vibrations and the brain with its various organs of sense, saying only that creatures with brains are an integral feature of the pattern which also includes the solid earth and the stars, and that without this integral feature (or pole of the current) the whole cosmos would be as unmanifested as a rainbow without droplets in the sky, or without an observer. Our resistance to this reasoning is psychological. It makes us feel insecure because it unsettles a familiar / Page 96 / image of the world in which rocks, above all, are symbols of hard, unshakeable reality, and the Eternal Rock a metaphor for God himself. The mythology of the nineteenth century had reduced man to an utterly unimportant little germ in an unimaginably vast and enduring universe. It is just too much of a shock, too fast a switch, to recognize that this little germ with its fabulous brain is evoking the whole thing, including the nebulae millions of light-years away.
Does this force us to the highly implausible conclusion that before the first living organism came into being equipped with a brain there was no universe-that the organic and inorganic phenomena came into existence at the same temporal moment? Is it possible that all geological and astronomical history is a mere extrapolation-that it is talking about what would have happened if it had been observed? Perhaps. But I will venture a more cautious idea. The fact that every organism evokes its own environment must be corrected with the polar or opposite fact that the total environment evokes the organism. Furthermore, the total environment (or situation) is both spatial and temporal-both larger and longer than the organisms contained in its field. The organism evokes knowledge of a past before it began, and of a future beyond its death. At the other pole, the universe would not have started, or manifested itself, unless it was at some time going to include organisms-just as current will not begin to flow from the positive end of a wire until the negative terminal is secure. The principle is the same, whether it takes the universe billions of years to polarize itself in the organism, or whether it takes the current one second to traverse a wire 186,000 miles long.
I repeat that the difficulty of understanding the organism / environment polarity is psychological. The history and the geographical distribution of the myth are uncertain, but for several thousand years we have been obsessed with a false / Page 97 / humility-on the one hand, putting ourselves down as mere "creatures" who came into this world by the whim of God or the fluke of blind forces, and on the other, conceiving ourselves as separate personal egos fighting to control the physical world. We have lacked the real humility of recognizing that we are members of the biosphere, the "harmony of contained conflicts" in which we cannot exist at all without the cooperation of plants, insects, fish, cattle, and bacteria. In the same measure, we have lacked the proper self-respect of recognizing that I, the individual organism, am a structure of such fabulous ingenuity that it calls the whole universe into being. In the act of putting everything at a distance so as to describe and control it, we have orphaned ourselves both from the surrounding world and from our own bodies-leaving "I" as a discontented and alienated spook, anxious, guilty, unrelated, and alone.
We have attained a view of the world and a type of sanity which is dried-out like a rusty beer-can on the beach. It is a world of objects, of nothing-buts as ordinary as a formica table with chromium fittings. We find it immensely reassuring-except that it won't stay put, and must therefore be defended even at the cost of scouring the whole planet back to a nice clean rock. For life is, after all, a rather messy and gooey accident in our basically geological universe. "If a man's son ask for bread, will he give him a stone?" The answer is probably, "Yes."
Yet this is no quarrel with scientific thinking, which, as of this date, has gone far, far beyond Newtonian billiards and the myth of the Fully Automatic, mechanical universe of mere objects. That was where science really got its start, but in accordance with William Blake's principle that "The fool who persists in his folly will become wise," the persistent scientist is the first to realize the obsolescence of old models of the world. Open a good, standard textbook on quantum theory / Page 98 / . . . the world cannot be analyzed correctly into distinct parts; instead, it must be regarded as an indivisible unit in which separate parts appear as valid approximations only in the classical [i.e., Newtonian] limit. . . . Thus, at the quantum level of accuracy, an object does not have any "intrinsic" properties (for instance, wave or particle) belonging to itself alone; instead, it shares all its properties mutually and indivisibly with the systems with which it interacts. Moreover, because a given object, such as an electron, interacts at different times with different systems that bring out different potentialities, it undergoes. . . continual transformation between the various forms (for instance. wave or particle form) in which it can manifest itself.
Although such fluidity and dependence of form on the environment have not been found, before the advent of quantum theory, at the level of elementary particles in physics, they are not uricommon . . . in fields, such as biology, which deal with complex systems. Thus, under suitable environmental conditions, a bacterium can develop into a spore stage, which is completely different in structure, and vice versa.2
Then there is the other, complementary, side of the picture as presented by the eminent biophysicist Erwin Schrodinger:
It is not possible that this unity of knowledge, feeling and choice which you call your own should have sprung into being from nothingness at a given moment not so long ago; rather this knowledge, feeling and choice are essentially eternal and unchangeable and numerically one in all men, nay in all sensitive beings. But not in this sense-that you are a part, a ,piece, of an eternal, infinite being, an aspect or / Page 99 / modification of it, as in Spinoza's pantheism. For we should have the same baffling question: which part, which aspect are you? What, objectively. differentiates it from the others? No, but inconceivable as it seems to ordinary reason, youand all other conscious beings as such-are all in all. Hence this life of yours which you are living is not merely a piece of the entire existence, but is in a certain sense the whole; only this whole is not so constituted that it can be surveyed in one single glance.3
The universe implies the organism, and each single organism implies theuniverse-only the "single glance" of our spotlight, narrowed attention, which has been taught to confuse its glimpses with separate "things," must somehow be opened to the full vision, which Schrodinger goes on to suggest:
Thus you can throw yourself flat on the ground, stretched out upon Mother Earth, with the certain conviction that you are one with her and she with you. You are as firmly established, as invulnerable as she, indeed a thousand times firmer and more invulnerable. As surely as she will engulf you tomorrow, so surely will she bring you forth anew to new striving and suffering. And not merely 'some day': now, today, every day she is bringing you forth, not once but thousands upon thousands of times. just as every day she engulfs you a thousand times over. For eternally and always there is only now, one and the same now; the present is the only thing that has no end.4

Executive Touch

"The radiation vault had been turned into a very appealing Executive Suite. Jack Wilkins sat upright on the hospital bed. Papers were scattered about,- evidence that the President was back to work already. He nodded gravely at Patrick Honor and said, "I wanted to personally thank you, Pat, for your remarkable if, uh, unorthodox suggestion. They tell me that I was down for the final count. How much longer must I remain sealed up in here?"
Honor had expected the direct approach; Jack Wilkins operated in that fashion. "I believe Wenssler gave us the clue to that answer, Mr President."
Wilkins' eyebrows formed sharp vees. "June 15th?" Honor nodded. "Yes sir, that would be my recom mendation. "
"What's going on, Pat? What does the shielding have to do with my recovery?"
Honor looked uncomfortably at Milt Clinton. His gaze roamed to the nurse and to the several members of the White House staff who were present. ,"It has been suggested, sir," he replied, "that I not attempt to answer such questions." .
"Suggested by whom?" Wilkins snapped.
Honor rocked gently on the balls of his feet. "It's pretty far-out stuff, Mr. President."
The Presidential gaze went immediately to an aide who stood alongside- the bed. "Mr. Honor and I will speak privately," he commanded. / Page 109 / "I'd like for Mr. Clinton to stay," Honor requested. The aide received an acquiescing nod from the President. The room was already beginning to clear. The aide was the last man out, insistently escorting - the nurse to the corridor outside.
"Sit down, gentlemen," Wilkins said.
Honor took a chair directly opposite the President.
Clinton dropped onto a lounge along the wall. Wilkins was closely scrutinizing Honor. He smiled suddenly
and said, "I understand you're to be 'my son-in-law."
Honor's jaw dropped and he said, "Sir?"
The President chuckled. "Angie has eyes for you, Pat."

"She's a sweet kid," Honor murmured.
"That 'sweet kid,' Pat, has very carefully checked you out. . . marital status, the whole bit. She's decided that you are waiting for her. I'd say you'd better be on your guard. Angie can be a very determined young lady."
Honor realized that the President was trying to ge;t things on a personal, informal footing; He grinned and replied, "Angie's a ray of sun around the executive offices, Mr. President. We're always gald to see her' come in."
"She's been the light of my life, since her mother died," Wilkins mused. "Well... let's get down to cases. Tell me about this 'far out' theory of yours." .
Honor said, "It's not a theory, sir. Maybe it would' be better if you were to ask direct questions. I'll answer them the best I can." ,
Wilkins stared at him for a moment, then flicked a glance to Clinton. "I understand that Curt Wenssler is recovering," he observed quietly. "Did you know Wenssler before his, uh, breakdown?"
Honor shook his head. "No sir."
"I knew him," Wilkins confided. "Since long before / Page 110 / we began funding the PPS program." He sighed. "Let's drop the pussy-footing yik-yak, Pat. I have been in close contact with Wenssler from the very beginning of the program. He has had my unqualified support. Now . .. as I understand it ... you were assigned to the program only yesterday. According to my. information, you have never shown any interest nor predispostion toward the psychic sciences. Suddenly you come on like Blackstone the Magician. I want to know what you've stumbled onto. I want to know what you know, Honor. "
Honor stole a quick look at his chief. "I, uh made contact with Professor Wenssler's protege," he replied slowly. "A Miss Barbara Thompson. You know her?"
Wilkins nodded. "I know of her. Wenssle rhas been her guardian since the death of her father."
"Yes sir. Well. . . I was on the scene when Wenssler transfigured low. Barbara was very-"
Honor doggedly held his ground, though feeling very strong disapproval from the couch behind him. "Professor Wenssler did not have a breakdown, sir. He experienced a transfiguration. But to the low side. Does that make sense to you?"
The President stared silently at Honor through. a long moment of thoughfulness. Then he sighed and said, "Maybe it does, Pat. Go ahead with the story."
Honor continued, "Well, Barbara had been going over some of Wenssler's notes. She thought she had a clue as to what had gone wrong for the Professor. She suggested an experiment, involving the two of us. A psychic experiment. As a result of that experiment, I experienced a sort of breakthrough into the object of Wenssler's research. I, uh, learned many things, Mr.President. "
"Such as?"
"Well. . ." Honor glanced at Clinton. . "I learned that / Page 111 / there are some highly destructive forces loose in this world, Mr. President." .'
"You're speaking of the collective-unconscious." "Sir?"
"Wenssler was , aware of these force. He equated them with Carl Jung's Collective Unconscious. Are you familiar with Jung's work?"
"No sir, not intimately."
"Swiss psychologist, died in 1961. Jung theorized that the subconscious minds of all men everywhere are linked, . that this constitutes a collective-unconscious from which spring all of man's creative expressions. Wenssler hypothesized this Collective Unconscious as the source of psychic power."
Honor looked at Clintonand said. "The Rogue." "What's that?" Wilkins asked quickly.
"We call this mental field 'The Rogue,' sir,"
Honor replied quietly. .
"Why do you call it that?" .
"Because it is malevolentent its effect on our world. It is, so to speak, in competition with God."
"Then why don't you call it
Satan?" Wilkins snapped.
"Others have called it that, also," Honor sighed.
"But it ... is not. .. wilfully evil. Actually, sir, this force is built and sustained by the minds of men."
"What do you mean, it isn't wilfully evil?"
"I mean that.. ." Honor groped for delicate shadings of words. " . . . that it operates through natural law . . . of the 'cause' and effect' variety. Or, 'action and reaction.' Also, it is anti-evolutionary. Especially since man's higher intellect has begun to evolve. You might say that the Rogue is a devolutionist."
"You'll have to explain that one, Honor," the Pres ident said, staring at him intently.
Honor sent a despairing look toward CHnton. "The Rogue pre-dates modern man. By billions of years. He / Page 112 / " was, u,h, an off-shoot of, uh, non-life evolution. His roots are very strongly in the geometric fields of, uh, I mean, uh, he is rooted in the material universe." Honor cleared his throat and explained, "Stars and planets, you know, and-"
"You're saying that the stars. are conscious, you know," the President observed, his interest quickening. "That's really what you're saying."
"Well. . . yes sir. . . of an elemental sort. The earth itself is conscious. The earth is evolving, sir. As is the entire material universe."
The President coughed, looked at the clock, and said, "I believe I can have a smoke now. Will you gentlemen join me in a cigar?"
Both men declined. Honor lit a cigarette. Clinton merely glowered. Honor lit the President's cigar. Wilkins coughed, glared at the cigar, and said, "Tried to cut me off completely. Say there's still some congestion." He patted his chest. "Smoke's good for my congestion
. '. . tried to tell 'em that." He chewed the. end of the cigar for a moment. "How is the earth conscious?" he. asked suddenly.
"It's energy conscious," Honor replied, surprising himself with the answer. "Energy is a consciousness unto itself. A form of consciousness; I mean. Those who say that consciousness is the only reality are deluded by this univer~al form, this energy consciousness. It's true that energy is the consciousness of inanimate matter, but it is a very elemental and unevolved consciousness. This is the root of the Rogue. This is his field, his natural one. But there was ,a mutation." .
"What sort of mutation?" The President's cigar had gone out.
"God goofed," Honor replied immediately. A peculiar expression was forming on his face. "Even the geometer of geometers has free will, and therefore / Page113 / parts free will to all the geometers. A rock has free will." Honor paused and ran a hand through his hair. Clinton's feet scraped the floor in a restless movement. Honor only vaguely heard it. He was sitting stiffly in the chair, as though at attention.
"What sort of mutation?" Wilkins asked again."The mind of man arose and began to dominate his environment. This was the plan, unfolding. This also caused the mutation, caused by the impact of free-will against free-will." Honor took a deep breath and said, "Gods in collision!" He stood, his face in awe and wonderment, and turned to Clinton. "It must be the shielding," he said in shocked tones. "Things are clearer now. The Rogue has been impacting me. Of course! Of course!" ,
Clinton had surged to his feet and taken a step toward Honor. The President caught his eye and sent a silent reprimand. Clinton hesitated, then sat back down.
"It's true that truth returns through the geometers," Honor breathed. "But not spontaneously. It builds the personality. .. and... returns through death. Error rises spontaneously, though, and "builds the personality of the Rogue. That's why. . . yes. . . that's why."
"Go on, Honor," Wilkins prompted quietly. "That's why what?"
"It's why-or how-the Rogue is taking over. Why he's so strong. That's it. Jung was right, Wenssler too.
It is the collection of self-concious error, forever being harvested by the Rogue. . . for God's sake. . . he's not unconscious any longer."
"What do you mean by that?" the President asked.
"He works through the law, sure, inexorable in the action-reaction sense, but he's also a self-conscious entity now. For God's sake, he knows what he's doing!"
'- Honor took a furious drag on his cigarette, spilling a / Page 114 / "long ash on the President's bed, and urgently said, "Mr. President, you have to stay in this vault until your numbers run out!" .
The President was visibly shaken. "Wenssler's nines,"
he murmured.
"Yes sir, and-" .
Clinton had come alive once again. He was at Honor's side and gently tugging him away from the bed. "I'm sorry, Jack," he said tensely. "Pat is still shaken up from that accident this afternoon. He-"
"No no, Milt," Wilkins broke in. "I understand everything he's been saying. Sit down. Let's kick this thing around some. Now, Pat. You said awhile ago that this, uh, Rogue is not willfully evil. Now you're saying that it is self-conscious, and knows what it's doing. That needs some clarification."
"It came to me," Honor said weakly. He glanced about the room. "The shielding. . . Truth comes from within, error from without. The Rogue's error-influence was interfering. with my ... until... well, when I started thinking. . . in here, behind the shielding, things became clearer. Even here I can sense a ... rather . . . fine influence. I suppose it isn't possible to shut him out completely, this side of the geometers. He's sort of omnipresent in his finest form. Yes sir, he is selfconscious and therefore willful . . . but his denser influences have to follow the law. The law of his root being, and this is an energy base. The shielding will protect you during your numbers. After that, the law itself will protect you."
What numbers?" Clinton asked irritably.
"Wenssler's nines," Wilkins said, his brow furrowed'
in thought. "He stumbled onto this ancient mathematical symbology in the Far East. . . seems to think it was the basis for the Cabalistic mysteries. You understand the intriguing aspects of the number nine, don't you?" / Page 115
Clnton shook his head, obviously surprised at the President's reaction to Honor's "babbling."
"Arabic numerals," the President explained, "were not generally adoptd.by the Western world until somewhere around the 10th Centruy, or so Wenssler tells me. He found evidence that they are incredibly ancient, however, and. . . well, look here, Milt. There are ten basic digits to the Arabic system, the one we've been using for 'a thousand years or so. These are the numerals 1 through 9, and the zero. The zero is not actually a value, however, standing alone, so it is sa,id that the basic Arabic numerals are the digits 1 through 9. Nine numbers, you see. Now. If you add those nine numbers together, you get a sum of 45. Now. Add the two digits of that sum, the four and the five, and you get a sum of nine. Thus it is said that the reduced sum of all digits is nine. Many of the ancient religious mysteries are resolved around that number. In all the mysteries, this curious property of numbers is regarded as being,
fraught with symbolism.

"Now W enssler was never much of a mathematician, but he stumbled onto something over in the East that shook him, right down to his core. He worked on the thing and came up with the idea that this value of nine symbolizes the very basis of creation itself. And he has done some amazing things with it."

"The blue car," Honor muttered.
Wilkins shot him a sharp glance. "You know about that, eh?"
"I tangled with it," Honor said, smiling glumly.
"Wenssler calls it a 'warp nine projection,' though I haven't the foggiest notion of how it actually works,"
WiIkins said. .
"Geometric displacement," Honor murmured. "How's that?"
"Man manipulates his environment," Honor replied / Page 116 / casually. "You have any idea how many geometers are disturbed by our technologies? Wenssler's mathematics rounds up the displaced geometers and gives them the new field. It's a sort of a matching process. You know the old science-fiction idea of teleportation? Well, Wenssler discovered the principle and learned how to use it, though in a limited sense. It's a matter of geometer alignment into the displaced fields. Pretty simple, really, once you see the principle."
"It's too much for me," Wilkins said,. frowning thoughtfully.
"It was too much for the Rogue, too," Honor replied. "This is what got him all stirred up, I'd guess. It seems likely that Wenssler was mating the Rogue's field to the causal field. I can't think of any other way to get a projection warp. It's okay to use the Rogue for simple psychic games, but this was too much."
"Are you saying that Wenssler awakened this; uh, whatever it is?"
Honor shook his head and said, "No, I'd say that the Rogue 'awakened' a very long time ago. But Wenssler very likely focussed his attention. We're in for a lot of hell, make no mistake. All over the world." Honor raised his eyes suddenly, a nerve jumped in his cheek, and he exclaimed, "Oh, hell!"
"What is it?" Wilkins asked. "Another 'revelation'?" "You could call it that." Honor replied shakily.
"There is but one self-conscious God in this geometric field we call the universe."
"What does that mean?" .
"It means that the true God does not realize himself until the job of human evolution is completed." The blood drained.from Honor's face. He leaned dgainst the bed, hands to his cheeks. "Oh God, Hadrin?" he cried. It can't bel"
Wilkins and Clnton exchanged uncomfortable / Page 117 / glances. Honor was not even aware of their presence. He was remembering Hadrin's instruction: "Go, Godmaker, and be true to the image." That's the entire story, isn't it, Honor was thinking. Go, Godmaker, and make the true God. The whole thing was in the hands of mankind. Continue evolving into the perfect image of the creator, or else be content with what you've got . . . live in the bosom of the Rogue forever. . . or until the geometers split. But how did one go about making the true God? What could Honor do? Why had he been given this knowledge? What could he do with it?
"Mr. President," he mumbled, "I've got to have some help."
Wilkins placed a hand on Honor's shoulder. "What can I do, Honor?" he asked solemnly.

"Evolve," Honor replied."

"Eliminate the impossible. Whatever remains, however improbable must be true"

TAURUS Apr 21 - May 21: 'When you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.' Sir Arthur Conan Doyle gave these words to Sherlock Holmes. You don't, though, have to be a great detective in order to see their relevance in your life this week. Something seemingly far-fetched is taking place. The more you try to understand it, the more confused you become. Surely, something can't really be happening or someone has got hold of the wrong end of the stick. Really, though;you had best believe the evidence of your own eyes. What's happening may be very strange but it is very positive.

TIMELESS EARTH

Peter Kolosimo 1974

Chapter

NINETEEN

Page 192

"The Indians say that thousands of years ago their ancestors travelled on great golden discs which were kept airborne by means of sound vibrations at a certain pitch, produced by continual hammer-blows. This is not so absurd as it may seem. Vibrations of a set frequency may have had the effect of increasing the atomic energy of gold, thus reducing the weight of the disc and enabling it to overcome gravity.'
'… To quote Pauwels and Bergier (op. Cit.,p. 197: ' The U.S. archaeologist Hyatt Verrill spent thirty years investigating the lost civilizations of Central and South America. . . In his fine novel, The Bridge of Light, he described a pre-Incaic city protected by a rocky defile which could only be crossed by a bridge constructed of ionized matter which could be made to appear and diappear at will. Verrill, who died at the age of eighty, insisted to the last that this was much more than a legend, and his wife who survives him, is of the same opinion."

SPACE ODDITY

"As every schoolboy knows, Pluto is the ninth planet. Now scientists want to demote it to just a lump of rock."

"Pluto, the ninth planet, discovered in 1930 and around 3.5 billion miles away, may be about to suffer the ultimate humiliation, a truly astronomical downgrade."

"If Pluto loses its planet status, a thousand astronomical textbooks will be wrong. School-children will have to unlearn the little mnemonics they have been taught (my favourite is My Very Everloving Mother Just Sent Us Nine Pies) and Earth's astrologers will be sent into as-yet unplumbed depths of confusion, frantically redrawing their charts to take into account the lack of this planet"
