"Wakefield wine merchant William Fennell contributed to the cost of Petrie's excavations at Koptos in 1893 - 1894"

After the excavations Petrie wrote to Fennell and sent him this sketch and the three pots shown in it. They were found in a foundation deposit below part of a temple to the God Min built by Thutmose III 1479 -1425 BC. Later he sent Fennell further pottery from this temple"

Deciphering Egypt's History

"Early scholars were baffled by the picture writing they found in Egypt, which they called hieroglyphics. It clearly held much information about Egypt's history and belief, but they couldnt translate it.

The in 1799 French soldiers found the Rosetta Stone. It held an inscription repeated three times, once in ancient Greek and two forms of Egyptian. The Greek could be read, so it was possible to start working out how to read the hieroglyphics.2
