In the

The same was in

Of Time And
Stars
Arthur C.
Clarke,1972
Foreword
These stories
were written during the quarter century that saw space
flight be transformed from a fantastic dream to an almost
humdrum reality. Already it is very hard for me to realize
that when I wrote
The
Sentinel in 1948 I never really believed that I
would see a moon-landing in my own
lifetime.
I seldom
remember the exact time and place when I obtained the
inspiration for a
story,
. The
idea behind
Into the Comet and
The Nine
Billion Names of
God both
involve computers and the troubles they may cause us. While
writing this preface, I had occasion to call upon my own HP
9100
A computer, Hal Junior, to answer an interesting
ques-tion.Looking at my records, I find that I have now
written just about one hundred short stories. This volume
contains
eighteen
of them: therefore, how many possible
18
storey
collections will I be
able to put together? The answer
as I am sure will
be instantly obvious to you
is
100 x
99
x 84 x
83 divided by
18
x 17 x 16
x 2 x 1. This is an impressive number
Hal Junior tells
me that it is approximately
20,772,733,124,605,000,000.

Call it ritual, if

All the many names
of
the Supreme Being God

There is a philosophical problem of some difficulty here,
which I do not propose to discuss, but
somewhere
among all the
possible combinations of letters that can occur are what one
may call the real names of
God.

Spaceguard
SOONER or later it
was bound to happen. On 30 June 1908, Moscow escaped
destruction by three hours and four thousand kilometres
-
a margin invisibly small by the standards of the universe.
Again, on 12 February 1947, yet another Russian city had a
still narrower escape, when the second great meteorite
less
than four hundred
kilometres from Vladi-vostok, with an explosion rivalling
that of the newly invented uranium
bomb.
In
those days, there was nothing that men could do to protect
themselves against the last random shots in the cosmic
bombardment that had once scarred the face of the Moon. The
meteorites of 1908 and 1947 had struck uninhabited
wilderness; but by the end of the twenty-first century,
there was no region left on Earth that could be safely used
for celestial target practice. The human race had spread
from pole to pole. And so inevitably. .

It seemed to Dr Ernst,
who had once made a study of visual illusions, that half the
time she was really looking at a horizontally curving
bay, not a surface that soared up into the sky. It required
a deliber-ate effort of will to accept the fantastic
truth.
Only
in the line directly ahead, parallel to the axis of Rama,
was normalcy preserved. In this direction was there
agreement between vision and logic. Here
-
for the next few
kilometres at least - Rama looked flat, and was
flat
And out there, beyond their distorted shadows and
the outer limit of the beam, lay the island that dominated
the Cylindrical

Hub
Control, Dr Ernst radioed, please aim your beam
at New
York.
The night of Rama
fell suddenly upon them, as the oval of light went sliding
out to sea. Conscious of the now invisible cliff at their
feet, they all stepped back a few metres. Then, as if by
some magical
stage
transformation the
towers of New York sprang into
view.
The
resemblance to old-time Manhatten was only super-ficial;
this star-born echo of Earths past possessed its own
unique identity. The more Dr Ernst stared at it, the more
certain she became that it was not a city at
all.
The
real New York, like all of Mans habitations had never
been finished still less had it been designed. This place,
however had an overall symmetry and pattern, though one so
complex that it eluded the mind. It had been conceived and
planned by some controlling intelli-gence
-
and planned by some

and then it had been completed, like a machine devised for
some specific purpose. After that, there was no possibility
of growth or
change.

Chapter 1 A.D.
96.
The three major
divisions of Revelation must be clearly held if the
interpreta-tion is to be sane and coherent. John was
commanded to write concerning three classes of
things (1.19): I. Things past, the things
which thou hast seen,i.e. the Patmos vision, 1.
1-20. II. Things present, the things which
are, i.e. things then existing

The third major
division, as Erdman (W.J.) has pointed out, falls into a
series of six sevens, with five parenthetical passages,
making, with the church divisions,
seven

The six sevens
are:

Edited By W.Y.

The number
seven
has long been a sacred number among Aryan and other races.
Its use in the Revelation of John illustrates this,
as does the conception of the
seven
day being
regarded as holy. In Nature, the number
seven
governs the periodicity and phenomena of life,as, for
example, in the series of chemical elements, in the physics
of sound and colour, and it is upon the number
forty-nine,
or

seven,
that the Bardo Thodol is thus scientifically
based.

The Esoteric Significance Of the Forty-Nine Days Of The
Bardo
Page 6
Turning now to our
text itself, we find that structurally it is founded upon
the symbolic number
Forty-nine,
the square of the sacred number
Seven;
for, according to occult teachings common to Northern
Buddhism and to that Higher Hinduism which the Hindu-born
Bodhisattva Who became the
Buddha
Gautama, the Reformer
of the Lower Hinduism and the codifier of the secret Lore,
never
repudiated,there
are
seven

seven
globes of a

each globe there are
seven
rounds of evolution, making the

stations of active
existence. As in the
/ Page

embryonic state in the
human species the foetus passes through every form of
organic structure
from the amoeba to
man, the highest mammal, so in the after-death state, the
embryonic
state of the psychic
world, the Knower or principle of con-sciousness, anterior
to its re-emergence in gross matter, ana-logously
experiences purely psychic conditions. In other words, in
both these interdependent embryonic processes the one
physical , the other psychical the evolutionary and the
involutionary attainments, corresponding to the
forty-nine
stations of existence, are passed
through.
Similarly,
the
forty-nine
days of the Bardo may also be Symbolical of the
Forty
and
Nine
Powers of the Mystery of the
Seven
Vowels. In Hindu mythology, whence much of the Bardo
symbolism originated, these Vowels were the Mystery of
the Seven
Fires and their
forty-nine
subdivisional
fires or aspects.
They are also represented by the Svastika signs upon
the crowns of the
seven
heads of the
Serpent of Eternity of the Northern Buddhist Mysteries,
originating in ancient India. In Hermetic writings they are
the
seven
zones of after-death, or Bardo , experiences, each
symbolizing the eruption in the Intermediate State of a
particular
seven-fold
element of the complex principle of consciousness, thus
giving the consciousness-principle
forty-nine
aspects, or fires, or fields of manifestation
