EXERGUE
What's this I'm bound for? no water there nor breath, twice deep, twice dark, twice vacant. There one lives by peace of heart sure: no sweet ejacu-lation happens there.
To this his interlocutor, the god
ATUM
responds,
"I've given you divinity in place of water, wind, and sweet ejaculation. And peace of mind for bread and beer. " 4
These "Words to be spoken by Osiris" come from the "Spell for Not Dying Again" in the Book of the Dead, and the passage, brief though it is, speaks to each of the three main concerns of this book, the word, number, and the phallic body.
In the word resides a hope for and a simulacrum of existence. The written language of Egypt made the name an icon for the thing, the proper name a means whereby the self continued to exist, even if all other effort for immortality were to fail.
This replication of the world in language exemplifies as well the mechanism of number, multiplicity, the plurality of being. In the doubling
page
of Osiris here as "Ani, Royal Scribe, Scribe for Divine Offerings to All the Gods, Overseer of the Granaries of the Lords of Tawer"5 lies the hope that we might evade the leveling of death and make a claim on the life of god, a claim on making the self a god.
And in the mention of sweet ejaculation is the gendered voice, the indissoluble link, in the male mind, of being to desire to the phallus. Others have translated the word less graphically, and less specifically in male voice, as "sexual pleasure," love joys," and love making," but the word in the text, ( Hieroglyphs omitted) nedjmemyt, is clearly the word of a man. It ends with hieroglyphic determinative picturing an ejaculating phallus, and is derived from the adjective nedjem, "sweet". It is a gendered voice, and the inseparability of gender and desire from that voice is an issue that draws our concern as well.
In its query from the shadows, the voice of Osiris is inseparable from the body of Osiris. The threat to his existence is exPlicitly a threat of dis- memberment and disembodiment. His resurrection, his justification under judgment, his connection with the fertility of the land, his link to the power of the throne, all these components of his identity are explicitly matters of the body.
Some of these features of Osiris figure prominently in the Egypt of the popular imagination, the Egypt of magic and the mummy's curse, of extravagant wealth entombed in the desert sand, but this is Egypt as kitsch, a strategy of alienation, the subordination of a superstitious, prodi- gal, and "effeminate" Other to a scientific, prudent and efficient, mascu- line Self in the IIWest.1I
The constitution and disposition of the other along such Orientalist lines is itself pernicious, but in the case of Egypt, it has done us the double disservice of obscuring the Egyptian paradigms that underlie so many of the assumptions we make even now about male identity, the relationality of self, and the word. Thus must we set about re-membering Osiris.

THE AGE OF FABLE ~
Myth of Osiris and Isis
"Osiris and Isis were at one time induced to descend to the earth to bestow gifts and blessings on its inhabitants. Isis showed them first the use of wheat and barley, and Osiris made the instruments of agri- culture and taught men the use of them, as well as how to harness the ox to the plough. He then gave men laws, the institution of marriage, a civil organiza- tion, and taught them how to worship the gods. After he had thus made the valley of the Nile a happy country, he assembled a host with which he went to bestow his blessings upon the rest of the world. He conquered the nations everywhere, but not with weapons, only with music and eloquence. His brother Typhon saw this, and filled with envy and malice sought during his absence to usurp his throne. But Isis, who held the reins of government, frustrated his plans. Still more embittered, he now resolved to kill his brother. This he did in the following manner: Having organized a conspiracy of seventy - two members, he went with them to the feast which was celebrated in honour of the king's return. He then caused a box or chest to be brought in, which had been made to fit exactly the size of Osiris, and declared/that he would give that chest of precious wood to whoso- ever could get into it. The rest tried in vain, but no sooner was Osiris in it than Typhon and his com- panions closed the lid and flung the chest into the Nile. When Isis heard of the cruel murder she wept and mourned, and then with her hair shorn, clothed in black and beating her breast, she sought diligently for the body of her husband. In this search she was materially assisted by Anubis, the son of Osiris and Nephthys. They sought in vain for some time; for / page 361 / when the chest, carried by the waves to the shores of Byblos, had become entangled in the reeds that grew at the edge of the water, the divine power that dwelt in the body of Osiris imparted such strength to the shrub that it grew into a mighty tree, enclosing in its trunk the coffin of the god. This tree with its sacred deposit was shortly after felled, and erected as a column in the palace of the king of Phrenicia. But at length, by the aid of Anubis and the sacred birds, Isis ascer- tained these facts, and then went to the royal city. There she offered herself at the palace as a servant, and, being admitted, threw off her disguise and appeared as the goddess, surrounded with thunder and lightning. Striking the column with her wand, she caused it to split open and give up the sacred coffin. This she seized and returned with it, and concealed it .in the depth of a forest, but Typhon discovered it, and cutting the body into fourteen pieces scattered them hither and thither. After a tedious search Isis found thirteen pieces, the fishes of the Nile having eaten the other. This she replaced by an imitation of sycamore wood, and buried the body at Philoe, which became ever after the great burying-place of the nation, and the spot to which pilgrimages were made from all parts of the country. A temple of surpassing magnificence was also erected there in honour of the god, and at every place where one of his limbs had been found minor temples and tombs were built to commemorate the event. Osiris became after that the tutelar deity of the Egyptians. His soul was supposed always to inhabit the body of the bull Apis, and at his death to transfer itself to his successor.

9
And I, behold, I establish my covenant with you, and with your seed after you;
10
And with every living creature that is with you, of the fowl, of the cattle, and of every beast of the earth with you; from all that go out of the ark, to every beast of the earth.
11
And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh! be cut off any more by the waters: of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.
12
And God said, This is the token of the covenant whIch I make
between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for:
perpetual generations:
13
I
do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a
COVENANT
between me and the earth.
14
And it shall come to pass, when
I
bring a cloud over the earth, that. the bow shall be seen in the cloud:
15
And
I
will remember my
COVENANT
which is between me and you: and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh

And the bow shall be in the. cloud;
and
I
will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant between
